This symposium brings together some of the leading experts from Canada, Italy and Spain to present the basic science research into the ECS and phytopharmacology of the Cannabis plant together with the best practices in the medical application of Medical Cannabis.
With over 20,000 articles published on Cannabis alone and another 9,000 articles on the ECS, it is imperative for medical practitioners to study the important role of the ECS and the therapeutic application of phytocannabinoids and related compounds on human health.
Research into the pharmacology of Cannabis led to the discovery of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) n the 1990’s. The ECS is a vast fatty acid neurotransmitter system than acts as the largest homeostatic signalling system in the human body. The discovery of the 2 endocannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 and their ligands, anandamide and 2-AG has led to an impressive body of research into basic physiological control mechanisms and applications to disease cure and management in the areas of pain, inflammation, cancer, neurology, psychiatry, digestion, skin, metabolism to name a few. Ethan Russo’s proposal of an Endocannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome has led to interest I further medical applications of cannabinoid therapy in such areas as fibromyalgia, IBS and migraines. Further legalization for medical cannabis in the USA and Canada has led to an explosion of research into the phytocannabinoids, such as CBD and THC, terpenes and bioflavonoids all found in the Cannabis plant.
